Built more than a century ago, this is a charming guesthouse surrounded by untouched wilderness that feels like it’s a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Along with the proprietress, visiting guests can enjoy a wide range of experiences, such as harvesting home-grown vegetables, fruits and herbs. There’s also an opportunity to do some hunting and engage in some do-it-yourself activities like wood chopping. In the evening, it’s all about the food. As well as the previously harvested wild vegetables and herbs, there are some amazing local dishes, including succulent Hida beef, sweetish and Okumino-kojidori, a three-way hybrid chicken which has a chewy texture and sweet taste. On top of all that, there’s the option of some wild game meat like deer and wild boar that the proprietress hunts herself. In addition to being more flavorful than farmed meat, game meat tends to be lower in saturated fat and is an excellent source of protein, minerals and B-vitamins. Delicious and healthy, the barbecued meal here is a true feast. With full stomachs, guests can then soak in the soothing Hinoki bath. Chigo no Mori also offers nearby experiences such as river activities and chestnut picking. It’s a delightful place to stay and the locals are very friendly and welcoming.
