Japanese oak handle short hammer series
KANAI SANGYO Co., Ltd. (Niigata)
“Japanese oak handle short hammer series” was developed by the second-generation owner who took over the hardware and tool wholesale business founded in 1954. With the theme of creating “things that seem to exist but don’t,” the owner incorporated craftsmen’s opinions to develop original products. In response to feedback from craftsmen that the handle end of a typical hammer, which is about 350 mm long, would hit and scratch roofs or floors when hung from the waist during work, a short hammer of approximately 250 mm was devised. To differentiate from the mass-produced steel pipe and fiberglass handles that are mainstream, domestic Japanese oak was used, and a distinctive snake-curved handle was adopted. This snake-curved handle has a sales record of over 10 years in lengths of 350 mm, 450 mm, and 600 mm, and the experience gained from this led to the creation of the short hammer. The natural warmth of the wood and the shape that fits comfortably in the hand have been well-received, earning the IDS Award at the Niigata IDS Design Competition in fiscal year 24. Encouraged by this award, the company aims to increase the variety and further expand sales in the future.
