HARI
Team MOCKO (Shizuoka)
HARI is a personal chair inspired by the experience of basking in dappled sunlight in a forest. Its primitive frame structure, with four legs inserted into thick pillars reminiscent of beams in wooden architecture, achieves both lightweight and excellent portability. Produced under the theme “Made in the Neighborhood” by eight companies located in the vicinity of Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, using superior materials and processing (such as Tenryu cypress and Enshu textiles), it features an original aesthetic and a relaxing seating posture. Team MOCKO is a woodworking project developed by Sosei Shoji Co., Ltd., which plans and sells wooden furniture, and Design Studio UO, based in Hamamatsu. The project reinterprets local culture, materials, techniques, and the tangible experience of daily life to propose new values needed for modern living through its products. The development of HARI was inspired by the pleasant experience we had when we visited the Tenryu Biring Forest and felt the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. After five years of trial and error, we have combined excellent materials and techniques through a local network and commercialized the product using a sustainable process. Weighing only 7.9kg, it can be easily assembled and disassembled by anyone without tools. With an adjustable headrest position and a three-dimensional seat structure that supports the lower back, it is designed to reduce fatigue even during long sitting sessions, and you can relax by resting your feet on the ottoman. The knockdown structure reduces packaging size, lowering logistics costs and making it easier to transport. The chair employs a coating technique suited for coniferous woods, which enhances both the hardness and aesthetic appeal, bringing out the beautiful wood grain of the cypress while ensuring durability for long-term use. It can be used both indoors and outdoors, making it perfect not only for use on a living terrace but also for outdoor activities like camping. As a “local × assembly × high-quality personal chair,” it adds new value not only to the interior market but also to the outdoor market.
