SAWARIGAMI
Shinkohsha Co., Ltd. (Tokyo)
The SAWARIGAMI series consists of new origami and congratulatory envelopes featuring our unique “sawarigami processing” technology, which creates a texture on the paper surface through special varnish treatment. This process adds a new value of tactile sensation to origami and congratulatory envelopes, which were traditionally differentiated only by color and pattern. Furthermore, under varying light conditions, delicate and elegant patterns of traditional Japanese designs emerge. By leveraging this unique processing technology, we aim to update traditional Japanese items by stimulating both visual and tactile senses. Shinkohsha Co., Ltd., which specializes in special printing processing, is celebrating its 39th anniversary this year and is located in Kita-ku, Tokyo. We primarily produce pamphlets, packages, and clear files and offer an in-house one-stop service that includes design, printing, post-processing, and shipping. With about 50 employees who are passionate about printing, we continually experiment to explore unconventional expressions and original printing methods. Although our special printing processes are fascinating, many are not yet widely known. To promote the appeal and potential of printing to a broader audience, we established the “Printing Processing Laboratory” brand and continuously conduct and share our experiments. The sawarigami processing is a unique technology born from these experiments, and the SAWARIGAMI series was developed as products that capitalize on the tactile qualities of the paper. The key points of SAWARIGAMI are its tactile feel and visual beauty. Not only does the sawarigami processing provide a pleasing rough texture, but we also carefully select paper suitable for origami and congratulatory envelopes. Additionally, by intentionally avoiding color printing, we aimed to create elegant Japanese patterns that emerge solely through light variation, making these products suitable not only as children’s toys but also for adult creative activities and formal occasions. SAWARIGAMI origami transcends its traditional role as stationery or toys, making it ideal as gifts or souvenirs, and as decor items for hospitality settings like inns, hotels, and Japanese restaurants through figures like folded cranes and chopstick holders. The SAWARIGAMI congratulatory envelope, while traditional, offers a unique twist, making it a memorable and precious gift for both giver and receiver. We encourage you to experience the delicate texture and beautiful patterns firsthand. The SAWARIGAMI series includes the following four lineups: SAWARIGAMI: tactile origami, SAWARIGAMI neon: tactile origami in neon colors, SAWARIGAMI Large: tactile origami in large sizes, SAWARIGAMI iwai: beautifully pure white tactile congratulatory envelopes.
