Konpeitou kingdom(Osaka Toka Co.,Ltd.) (Osaka)
Osaka Toka Co.,Ltd. is one of only a few domestic manufacturers specializing in unique and diverse Konpeito (a type of Japanese sugar candy) production and sales. Based in the Kansai region, the company is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Konpeito candy, operating the corporate museum, Konpeito Museum. Staying true to its roots, the company has created a product that combines Konpeito candy and wine.
The history of Konpeito candy in Japan dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries when confectionary adopted from Portugal known as “Confeito” was introduced. Legend has it that in 1569, these sweets were presented as a gift to Oda Nobunaga, a famous Japanese warrior, through missionaries who came from abroad. Madeira wine, a fortified wine produced in the Madeira Islands of Portugal has been added to complement the Konpeito candy. Fortified wine refers to wine with further alcohol added during the brewing process, enhancing its richness and shelf life. Madeira wine, in particular, is known for its longevity and distinctive savory aroma, making it one of the world’s three major fortified wines, alongside Spain’s sherry and Portugal’s port wine. For this particular product, Osaka Toka used a 1973 Madeira wine made from the grape variety “Boal,” renowned for its aromatic fragrance, balanced acidity, and sweetness. The luxurious flavors of this time-honored wine have been expertly combined with Konpeito candy, making it perfect as a treat for oneself or as a special gift for memorable occasions, tailored to the taste of adults.
