KUMIKO Light

MURAYAMA MOKKO Inc. (Kyoto)

KUMIKO Light is a wooden cylindrical lamp shade created from three-dimensional Kumiko woodcraft (Kyo-Kumiko). Kumiko craft is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which wooden parts are joined into geometrical patterns without using nails or metal fittings, creating delicate designs. It is even found in the ornamentations of Horyuji Temple, said to be the oldest existing wooden architecture in the world. Since the Asuka period (538-710) up to the present, Kumiko woodcraft has been constructed on flat surfaces in general. However, at Murayama Mokko led by master joiner Shinichi Murayama, in addition to the traditional craft passed down from ancient times, an original technique was developed in which the craft is built on a curved surface. The original technique, called Rittai Kumiko Zaiku (Kyo-Kumiko) (three-dimensional Kumiko woodcraft), is patented (patent number 6940891), and can be used not only for small craftworks, but also for large-scale space production. One such example is the shrine-style wedding hall in the luxurious Palace Hotel Tokyo. The company created the KUMIKO Light with the hopes to bring the structural beauty of the curved surface Kumiko closer to everyday life. Handcrafted by the master joiner one by one from hundreds to thousands of wooden parts, the Kyo-Kumiko lamp is truly a work of illuminating art, emitting a warmth that is only possible through the handiwork of an artisan with a vast knowledge of wood and masterful traditional joining techniques. The patterns are selected from various traditionally auspicious patterns of Japan, and all wooden parts are made from hinoki cypress produced in Kyoto Prefecture, known for the warm colors and veins as well as the wonderful hinoki fragrance. The emitted light produces patterns of Japanese silhouettes that create a soft rhythm in the space, and gently illuminates the room with lights and shades.
