Gold Gilded Red Fuji Glass Plate

Huduru Craft (Kyoto)

This decorative glass plate portrays the iconic Mount Fuji’s red tinted image “Akafuji” (Red Fuji) utilizing gold gilding craftwork, a technique developed during the Momoyama and Edo periods (16th to 19th century) for decorating kimono and belts with gold foiling, and passed on and still evolving today. Teaming up with a glass processing manufacturer, the company created this decorative plate by gilding cotton fabric with pure gold foil and silver foil, layering it with a different material silver lamé fabric, adhering them to the backside of the glass using a unique method, then coating and enclosing them with a special resin. The resin on the backside achieves non-slip and shatter-resistant effects. In addition, by layering of the fabrics, it acts to soften the strong red, gold and silver colors, expressing the understated aesthetics of Japan. The Red Fuji motif is based on a rare natural phenomenon in late summer and early fall, in which the mountain is tinted red reflecting the morning sun. Since it can only be seen a few times during the year, the Red Fuji has been traditionally associated with good fortune such as in disaster avoidance, prosperous business and childbearing. The gilded Red Fuji locked in a glass plate is a perfect good luck gift for New Year’s decoration, housewarming, wedding and many other celebrations.
