Kawatsura Maki-e Lustrous Lacquered Glass

Sakaida CO., LTD. (Akita)

An urushi lacquer artist of the Kawatsura area of Yuzawa city, Akita Prefecture, hand-painted the traditional maki-e art onto the bottom of glassware to create the Kawatsura Maki-e Lustrous Lacquered Glass series. Kawatsura has produced urushi lacquerware for 800 years, and the technique is designated as one of Japan’s traditional craftworks. This product was created by Naoto Kato, a young Kawatsura Maki-e artist, fusing the traditional maki-e technique with modern glass materials as an exploration of the possibilities of urushi lacquer. Design is drawn on the bottom of glassware utilizing the unique maki-e technique, which lays an additional decorative foundation of gold dust or foil underneath the urushi lacquer drawing. The lustrous design glimmers as beverage is poured into the glass for added visual pleasure when drinking. Since the design and colors change depending on the viewing angle, the glasses can also be enjoyed as décor in the living room when not used. Designs include motifs inspired by Japan’s four seasons and Akita Prefecture such as Namahage demons and Akitainu dogs. In addition, your very own original design maki-e glasses can also be made. The glassware comes in various types, from guinomi sake glass to free glass, ajiwai glass and katakuchi pouring glass, to blend into a range of modern living styles whether it be Japanese or Western. They are encased in wooden gift boxes made with laminated Akita cedar wood, and make wonderful presents or souvenirs.
