Egawa Mizu Yokan
EGAWA Co. (Fukui)
Available in wintertime only, Egawa Mizu Yokan has been popular as a local delicacy of Fukui prefecture. Founded in 1937 as a confectionery maker, EGAWA Co. became a specialized store in 1950 dedicated to the production and sales of mizu yokan, which is a type of azuki bean jelly. Shipping to all over Japan began in 1985, offering more customers an opportunity to enjoy the flavor of Fukui.
Fukui has a tradition of eating mizu yokan in winter and the locals celebrate the New Year with osechi ryori (traditional New Year feast) and mizu yokan. Although it is low in sugar and has a short expiration date, the company does not use additives and makes the confectionery only with simple ingredients. The high-quality brown sugar sourced from Okinawa, which is used as a secret ingredient, adds a rich, sweet flavor to the product. The mizu yokan is as thin as 1.5 cm, and the light texture offers a refreshing sensation when it passes through the throat, making it easy to eat.
Egawa Mizu Yokan has won the highest award at the National Confectionary Exposition in 1994. The company dedicates itself to pass down the traditional local winter delicacy to future generations.
