“Kimono” petit cakes with Japanese auspicious patterns

Kyomatoikashi Cacoto (Kyoto)

These two-bite sized petit cakes are made with sponge cake sandwiched with various ingredients such as cream, jam, nuts, red bean paste and fruits, then coated with white chocolate. On top, the cakes are decorated with traditional patterns that are considered good luck. The confectionery shop is owned by a couple, the fourth-generation of rental clothing company established in 1897 and a pâtissière. As fewer people are wearing kimonos these days, the owner couple created these “kimono” cakes in hope of bringing Japan’s traditional wear closer to people through sweets enjoyed by people of all ages. The names of the cakes are taken from traditional Japanese patterns with each meaning explained in an enclosed leaflet. The packaging was inspired by “obi” belt and “obijime” cord. The Japanese patterns are gaining popularity and customers enjoy choosing the cake based on its meaning, thinking of the receiver.
