Edo Kiriko Series

Taburo Kobo (Tokyo)

The origin of Edo Kiriko is said to date back to 1834 when Kyubei Kagaya, owner of a glassware store in Odenmacho area in Edo (present-day Tokyo), tried engraving designs on the surface of glass using “kongosha” emery powder. Western-style glass cutting techniques were introduced from Europe during Meiji Period, which merged with the Japanese techniques to form the Edo Kiriko glasswork known today. In 1985, it was designated a traditional craft of Tokyo, and was recognized as a traditional Japanese craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, in 2002. Taburo Kobo offers Edo Kiriko glassware made by skilled artisans carrying on the tradition as well as pieces infused with new, fresh styles. Each crafted by hand, enjoy the beauty in these traditional masterpieces.
