Edo Glass is a glasswork crafter make each piece by hand using a traditional method that has been kept alive since the Edo Period. The glass manufacturing in Tokyo is said to have begun in the early 18th century with products for the mass-market such as mirrors, eyeglasses and wind chimes. While inheriting the traditional techniques, with the introduction of new knowledge and techniques from Europe and the US later in the Meiji Period, Edo Glass has evolved into a regional industry through the Taisho and Showa periods. It has been recognized as an official traditional craft by both Tokyo and Japan respectively in 2002 and 2014. Taburo Kobo’s Edo Glass Series mainly features komon patterns and Ukiyo-e designs that have been beloved in Japan since the Edo Period. All products are handmade, making each piece unique.
