SAYAMARU (Fruit tomato from Nagano)
JAPAN POST Co., Ltd. (Tokyo)
Produced in Nagano Prefecture, Sayamaru fruit tomato is an original product grown and delivered by Japan Post. Grown with reduced water to achieve higher level of sugar concentration, the tomatoes are sweeter and fruitier compared to normal varieties. Sand cultivation method is employed which takes advantage of the well-drained sand to maintain the right amount of moisture for growing fruit tomatoes. It also prevents pests and disease problems caused by continuous tomato cultivation, making it possible to produce safe tomatoes with fewer pesticides. In addition, Nagano’s climate with a large difference in temperature between day and night through autumn to spring is also ideal for growing tomatoes, which helps reaching higher sugar concentrations and intense flavor by applying a moderate stress to tomatoes. The brand name “Sayamaru” is a coined word combining “sawayaka (refreshing)” and “manmaru (round)” that reflect the image of a tomato, as well as the postal code “380” of the region in Nagano City where the tomatoes are grown. The package is also designed by a company in Nagano. Working together with local companies, Japan Post aims to promote Sayamaru tomatoes throughout Japan.
