HINATA stone chopstick rest -Small Mountain OYAMA on the table-
Sunny-on (Kanagawa)
These chopstick rests were made from Hinata stone, a local resource of Isehara in Kanagawa, using as a motif the city’s symbol Mount Oyama, which is one of the main elements of Isehara’s tangible and intangible cultural assets that have been designated as Japan Heritage. After the stone quarries were closed down in 1970, Hinata stone has been forgotten by people. In addition, the city’s landscape has changed as most of the structures made of Hinata stone are being replaced by granite and other types of stones. Given these circumstances, the company thought to convey the charms of Hinata stones to as many people as possible to pass on its history, culture, tradition and techniques with the aim of revitalizing the industry. The product has a triangular pyramid shape just like Mount Oyama, while the design of the part where you place the chopsticks was inspired by the “sando,” or the main street approaching the sacred mountain, which is another characteristic of the mountain. Once placed on a dining table, the chopstick rest looks as if a miniature version of Mount Oyama is standing on the table. Focusing on the fact that the Hinata stones form part of the Mount Oyama, the company has decided to produce these chopstick rests to show appreciation for nature and food. Leveraging the stone’s properties that make it easy to process, fine details that are difficult to apply with other types of stones were achieved while the products were polished for finishing using modern technology. In addition, the products offer an opportunity for people who pick this item to learn about Hinata stones, which would also help preserve the city’s unique features. Made entirely in Isehara, the chopstick rests carry the company’s hope for passing on history, culture, tradition and technology as well as restoring the closed stone quarries.
