Wooden bowl Maki-e

Wakacho Co., Ltd. (Wakayama)

Kuroe town in Kainan City in Wakayama is one of the largest producers of lacquerware items in Japan next to Yamanaka and Aizu. The manufacturing process of Kishu lacquerware, which boasts a long tradition of over 400 years, can be roughly divided into creation of the wooden base, coating with lacquer and, decoration. Over 50 steps are required to create a single item and it takes about three months including the drying period to complete. The creation of traditional lacquerware has long been practiced only by skilled artisans dedicated to respective roles of creating the base, applying the foundation, coating with urushi lacquer, and decorating with Maki-e. And this is still how the Kishu lacquerware is being made in Kuroe today. While Kishu lacquerware items made of plastic continue to increase nowadays, Wakacho Co., Ltd. has launched the new series to revive the traditional wooden lacquerware that exude a warm feeling. The items are made of jujube wood produced in North America to save cost so that they can be accessible to a wider audience. Items made of natural wood are elegant and lightweight and comfortably fit on your hand.
