Karinto Manju was born from the company’s desire of developing new sweet that can convey the charm of brown sugar, which is an essential ingredient for Japanese sweets. “Manju” is a sweet that consists of sweet red bean paste filling encased in a soft wheat dough, while “karinto” is a sweet deep-fried brown sugar snack. Both of them are representative Japanese sweets that show the appeal of brown sugar. After much trial and error, the company successfully fused the light and refreshing sweetness of manju with the richness of deep-fried brown sugar of karinto to create a snack that boasts a rich aroma of the brown sugar. The aroma of the brown sugar that spreads in your mouth somehow evokes a nostalgic feel. Also, the sweetness and smoothness of the red bean paste were adjusted to enhance the aroma of the brown sugar while the soft bun was designed to have an appropriate chewy texture to bring out the respective characteristics of karinto and manju. Karinto Manju therefore expresses the charm of brown sugar, which is indispensable for Japanese sweets, by a hybrid of traditional Japanese sweets. The harmony between the two sweets makes the product an authentic Japanese sweet that embodies the company’s spirit of omotenashi.
