MARINUS basic skincare cosmetics series that incorporates shark fin collagen was developed by Kesemo, a restoration project established by Kesennuma City and 30 local companies after the area was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake with the aims of restoring the area by producing something new. The idea of respect for nature and things is deeply rooted in Japanese culture since ancient times, which is also reflected on the people’s mind of avoiding waste as much as possible. People of Kesennuma also value life and believe in manufacturing with consideration for the nature’s blessings. It is said that sharks do not have a part to throw away. Therefore, in addition for use as food, the project aims at using all parts of a shark in different applications so that no part is wasted. The president of the company is also engaged in inshore tuna fishery and owns a ship for “haenawa” longline fishing. In pursuit of sustainable fishery, he is committed to make full use of fish, which is an important resource caught in accordance with international regulations. The products were developed by applying Kesennuma’s high technology cultivated in its shark industry that allowed processing of collagen speedy at low temperature to overcome the disadvantage of collagen that becomes liquid gelatin when heated, which lowers the moisturizing effect. In addition, the project team succeeded in extracting beauty ingredient from the upper caudal fin to produce cosmetics that are highly absorbent with a non-sticky texture. Other ingredients are also of natural origin sourced locally to ensure safety and security.
