HANAO SHOES®︎

KYOTO TRADITIONAL CULTURE INNOVATION LABORATORY/Whole Love Kyoto (Kyoto)

HANAO SHOESⓇ are simple yet unique all-new “Made in Japan” item that combines sneakers and “hanao,” which is a thong knotted in “geta” and “zori” Japanese traditional footwear. The distinctive design was inspired by Japanese white “tabi” socks worn when wearing kimono. Being particular about using Japan-made products, the hanao thongs are mainly produced by artisans at Kikunokonomi, a long-established Japanese sandal maker and a purveyor to the Imperial Family, while using canvas shoes from Moonstar and leather shoes from Shiotani Industry, shoe makers based in Kurume and Himeji, respectively. The hanao thongs are simply attached to the shoes so that you can wear them with socks like regular shoes. Not only are these eye-catching shoes a fun addition for a unique kimono/yukata styles, they are also perfect for daily wear as well as for those who are not used to wear Japanese geta or zori. HANAO SHOESⓇ are one of the items offered by the Kyoto-born fashion brand “Whole Love Kyoto.” Developed under the theme of “Old Is New,” the brand runs counter to the modern world which is flooded with new things every day, and intends to introduce attractiveness of traditions and manufacturing from Kyoto. KYOTO TRADITIONAL CULTURE INNOVATION LABORATORY/Whole Love Kyoto is passionate about producing Made in Japan products by making use of techniques passed down from Japanese traditional craftspeople.
