Kowa chopstick rest

Mutou Company (Hokkaido)

This company has produced wooden furniture in Akabira, Hokkaido for over 100 years. It aims to deliver products that offer the warmth that only wood from Akabira — an area blessed with abundant nature — can provide. Wood comes from regionally native trees such as pine, willow, cherry, painted maple, and white birch.
Each item boasts unique features. For example, some broken tree branches, left for a long time, produce an interesting grain pattern. Such branches are cut into round slices and dried naturally for three to five months. After the bark is removed, each piece is rounded off and dyed with vegetable oil and natural paint, then left to dry before polishing. During the process, unique patterns and shapes are formed, making each piece one-of-a-kind item that exudes warmth and wabi-sabi — an ancient Japanese aesthetic of embracing imperfections. You’ll be sure to find a favorite for everyday use.
