Wayoufuku Houki
takakurakougei (Iwate)
Even a mundane, everyday object can exist on an entirely different level. That is the realization that comes to mind when using the Wayoufuku Houki, a broom for cleaning both Japanese and Western clothes. Try brushing off the sleeve of a cashmere sweater with a few strokes, and you will be amazed at how the broom efficiently removes dirt without fuzzing, and smooths out the fabric nicely. The secret is the curly fibers of self-grown, pesticide-free sorghum, which get their curls from the seasonal wind of the Tohoku region, which is known as “yamase.” The fibers are carefully selected over three months for the perfect curls. By using generous amounts of this sorghum fiber, the broom gets its unique ability to clean without damaging clothes. It is a culmination of the materials created by the natural powers of Iwate Prefecture and the unwavering efforts of its people.
