A number of machiya properties are dotted around Omiya-cho, allowing guests to select a house and location best suited to their needs at the time. Whether traveling with a large family, or with a pet, there is a machiya for you.
Each traditional Kyo-machiya layout is preserved as its original, so some offer a view from the bathroom into the courtyard and with a semi-outdoor bath. The items, such as an old shed in the courtyard, have been repurposed to be used inside the house as decoration, creating a mix of old and new.
Though the building retains its old world charm, it is fitted with modern appliances such as an air conditioner and modern toilet. The washing machine and the basic kitchen also make a longterm stay easy.
To maintain the images of “old” Kyoto, a liquid crystal TV screen has been installed inside of an old fashioned 1960s TV set, making it feel like you’re back in the Showa era.
