A unique flower arranging experience using wood shavings

UZU hanaiku hanaemi (Kanagawa)

Wood has extraordinary moisture retention properties, making it the perfect “mini vase” in which to place small flowers and cut offs. By using wildflowers or flowers you find in your garden you can create a beautiful and natural interior item.
The wood shavings not only serve as a vase, but you can also break them off into smaller pieces, or tie them into knots. Because they retain water so well, they also work as an all-natural humidifier.
By using surplus stock from a timber shop, the company follows the Japanese spirit of mottainai, which means to avoid letting things go to waste. Also, one part of the work involved in making the flower vases is consigned to people with disabilities.
Even though it seems like a simple curled wood shaving on a plate with a flower in it, there is a lot of meaning behind it. It’s beautiful in its simplicity, making you think. It’s also a great opportunity to unleash the creativity within.
